Knowing that a gym is only as strong as the community that supports it, we are committed to providing world-class coaching, programming and customer service. It is our goal to take people from point A to point B – from where they are to where they want to go. We offer two programs: Karhu CrossFit and Karhu Method.

Here. #Repost @chuckbennington ・・・ Perspective: If you’ve been in CrossFit as a sport and community for a significant amount of time, you remember when being able to “RX” a WOD was an aspirational goal, not a default expectation. _ Early on, most of us scaled most of the workouts, most of the time. We would knock out the @crossfit “Mainsite” or “Mothership” WOD to the best of our ability, and then our load/time/reps/rounds would “Post to comments” on crossfit.com, with what scales or substitutions we used to preserve the intent of the programming. _ In 2006/2007 it was not uncommon that a higher skill or heavier load WOD would have LITERAL handful of fire breathers earn the right to post “RX” next to their score. _ Being able to RX specific Girl and Hero WODs were goals that guided much of the fitness journey for significant amounts of time. I spent years working toward my goals of RX “Isabel”, “Nate”, and “Nasty Girls”. _ As a coach and affiliate owner, I have absolutely heard the groans of an RX piece of programming being “too hard” many times. _ On the interwebz I have certainly read and continue to read complaints of the same nature. _ Change your perspective. _ If the RX isn’t considerably difficult, how are we supposed to forge elite fitness as a community? _ If everybody can do everything as RX, then it’s not special. It has no sense of achievement or accomplishment. Nobody is forced to set goals. Nobody has a higher level of fitness to work to. _ Part of what drew me to CrossFit was that there was no limit, no plateau. There was always something to work on and reach for. _ There’s no shame in the scaling game, it’s part of the journey. _ No achievement of significance is ever easy. And when you reach it, you’ll be glad it wasn’t. _ If you’ve been around for a while, what was the first RX WOD that was a huge personal goal for you? March Athlete of the Month: Matt Connor AKA (@mackcondor) • Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit? A: I started in Chicago back in September of 2017 and started at Karhu last June. Before that my only workout was playing sports and I didn't like going to the gym. When I did go, I wandered around like a lost child because I had no idea what I was doing. • Q: How did you get into it? A: My friend convinced me to try it out after I asked him how he got into such great shape. I was skeptical, but also jealous of his transformation from desk jockey to beef cake so I gave it a shot. When I started I immediately loved the competition as well as how supportive everyone was. The support from coaches and other classmates helped me stick with it. • Q: What is your favorite movement/ workout? A: I'm a fan of all the olympic lifts because it's all still pretty new and challenging to me. My favorite workouts are the Saturday partner WODs. The added strategy and pressure of not letting a teammate down make it easier to push yourself (to almost yak). • • Congrats, Matt! April Athlete of the Month: Kelleigh Thomas aka @kelleighbear _______________________________________________________ Q: How long have you been doing crossfit? A: Since January of 2018, so just over a year. •••• Q: How did you get into it? A: My husband, Reagan, and I both started working out with a personal trainer about a year before joining Karhu. It was fun to start working out and see changes in our bodies, but the changes were slow, and the training sessions were pretty expensive. We had started watching the CrossFit games every year and I remember thinking it was super cool, but I was really intimidated, too. Ultimately, coworkers from both of our jobs convinced us to come to Karhu on a Saturday for a community workout. We said goodbye to our personal trainer the next week and have been regular 7PM-ers ever since! •••• Q: What is your favorite movement and workout? A: Hands down the deadlift. It's so fun to be able to look at something and say, yeah, I could probably pick that up! I love any movement that I can really see applying to normal life, like farmers carrying groceries. My favorite workout is one rep max deadlifting! I also secretly love-hated the 12 Days of Christmas workout... #crossfit #jääkarhu #community #austintexas #fitness

#Repost @estradaflys ・・・ Coaching should be simple but effective. Just like in CrossFit, simple is not always easy but it gets the job done. Our job is to take our athletes from Point A to Point B. That part is simple. The hard part is that every athlete has different limitations (mobility, flexibility, strength, coordination, injuries) and require different coaching cues in order to get from A to B as safely and as effectively as possible. As a coach, have a process...a method to the madness. Organize your coaching tool belt and be prepared for anything. World-Class Fitness in 100 Words - Eat meat & vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat. - Practice and train the major lifts: Deadlift, Clean, Squat, Presses, Clean and Jerk and Snatch. - Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: Pullups, Dips, Rope Climbs, Push Ups, Presses to Handstand, Pirouettes, Flips, Splits and Holds. - Bike, Run, Swim, Row, etc… Hard and Fast. - 5 or 6 days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. - Routine is the enemy. - Keep workouts short and intense. - Regularly learn and play new sports. - -Greg Glassman
