Athlete of the Month: Norma Herrera •••• Q: How long have you been doing crossfit? A: It’s been about 2 1/2 months. Q: How did you get started? A: I got started by looking up crossfit gyms. I was tired of going to the gym and not getting things done. Crossfit has show me that working out doesn’t have to be boring. Q: What are your favorite movements/workouts? A: My favorite movements are squats ,deadlifts and jump rope. What I enjoy about CrossFit is pushing myself to get through the workouts that seem almost impossible to finish. Having the coaches there to encourage me to keep going is the best. Congrats Norma! We are proud of the work and commitment you have put in during your short amount of time you have been with us! •••• #crossfitjaakarhu #austin #fitness #community #crossfit

What kind of people do you attract? • The Law of Attraction is REAL, and it works in personal relationships, friendships and yes, in business as well. We are strong believers in this law, and we consciously act to attract the kind of people that we want to be around, coach and interact with on a daily basis. • For us at @karhustrength, this means intentionally creating our culture, attitude and mindset and then instilling these attributes in our members. Expectations must be set up and made clear from the first interaction; consistent followthrough and feedback must be given to ensure that the culture and people you are trying to attract manifest. • The best example we have is the man, the myth, the serial CrossFitter: @gregmulesmith. Greg was there with us at our inception. He was there with us before we began this gym journey and has been with us every single step of the way. He is the consummate mentor. Not only does he take time out of his busy days to offer advice and feedback, but he also acts as an ambassador of our brand and our mission. When he’s in the gym (which he usually is), he is the first person to greet new members when they walk through the doors. He makes sure people feel welcome in our space, he makes introductions to others in the gym, and he leads by example: taking on challenges, attending socials and connecting business leaders in the community to each other when he can. • We have yet to meet another person so gracious with their time, energy and money. We are forever grateful to Greg for all that he has done and continues to do, and are incredibly lucky to have attracted this man into our lives. • PS: He is also one of the most badass golfers we know. Congrats on your recent win this past weekend Greg. You continue to inspire us daily. Thank you. • #karhu #strength #thekarhustrengthco #crossfit • 🐻

#Repost @sarafina_lynn ・・・ When coaching athletes on handstands, I like to first point out the difference in an open shoulder vs. closed shoulder. ••• If you’re wanting the “perfect” handstand, you need to understand that the shoulder must be completely open. Think upside down hollow body! At no point in time, even when walking, should there be a break in the front side shoulders, and/or low back (unless fatigue is real and that’s the only option). ••• Often times I hear coaches cue their athletes to arch in their back, when in reality, that causes the athlete to lose tension throughout their trunk, and forces them to close their shoulders, ending with an insane amount of pressure in the wrists and low back. ••• In order to balance and walk efficiently, for an extended period of time, the pressure needs to be taken away from the hands, and wrists, and moved into the shoulders, thus the need to be STACKED. 💗 ••• I tried to show the difference between the two. Refer to 2nd video for better reference!!

If we had one picture to describe our clan, this is it. The people who cross the threshold of our gym don’t just “enter the gym”, they enter our family. They are our friends, our athletes, our clients; our motivation. • There is something very unique and powerful in two people touching. A fist bump, a handshake, a pat on the back or a hug. Amplify that by 100x, and you get the Karhu Break. • At the end of every class, gathering and competition, we come together as one to acknowledge the presence, hard work and effort of every individual. With the break, we also acknowledge that every individual is part of a larger group: our group. Karhu. • We can all be powerful on our own, but we know that when many people of the same mindset, attitude and intention band together, we can become more; achieve more as a collective. • “For the strength of the Sleuth is the Bear, and the strength of the Bear is the Sleuth.” • #karhu #strength #thekarhustrengthco #austin #crossfit • 🐻

Community. Culture. Fitness. • These are our pillars. • Community: Our Tribe. Our People. It’s not just who is a member of our gym, it’s how we interact with them - and how they interact with each other. It’s the smiles and the sweat; the hard work and the team work. Our Community is our life source. It’s why we wake up and it’s why we strive to be excellent in all things big and small. • Culture: Our Ethos. Our Beliefs. It’s what our gym is built on. It’s the “Why” behind everything we do. It’s our logo, our words, our attitude and our actions. It’s the way the gym looks, but it’s more than what you see. It’s the foundation upon which everything is built and it’s the intangibles that you feel when you enter Karhu. • Fitness: The Vehicle through which our Community and our Culture celebrate themselves and each other. We do a lot of Fitness, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. In between the warm-ups and the WODs is where you will find everything else. It’s the reason why people show up, but it’s not the reason people stick around. • #karhu #crossfit #strength #thekarhustrengthco • 🐻

#Repost @estradaflys ・・・ Handstand Balance is a skill. Balance is one of the neurological components of our 10 general physical skills it can only be developed through practice. Here are a few important things to know about Handstand Balancing. Foot vs Hand: Your foot provides a larger base of support simply because of your heel. Because the heel of your foot extends past your ankle, it makes staying upright easier. Your palm does not extend past your wrist, therefore making it harder to balance on your hands. However, spreading the fingers wide gives you a larger base of support to make up for that Hips vs Shoulders: Your hips provide a larger/stronger base of support. Also, when standing upright your center of gravity is closer to the ground and below your hips. When inverted, your center of gravity is a over your hips and supported by the shoulder which are not as strong of a base. Roughly 70% of your mass is in your lower body. So when you’re inverted you are having to stabilize a majority of your body weight with a smaller base system. Overbalance vs Under-balance: Finding balance comes from the hands not the body. Once the body is stacked (shoulders on top of wrist and hips on top of shoulders) and holding tension from fingers to toes, the rest is up to the hands. Overbalance is when the body starts to fall backward (heel side). To correct, you must shift weight from the fingers to the palm of the hand. Under-balance is when the body falls forward (toe side). To correct, you have to shift the weight toward the fingers. @thegymnasticscourse @whiteboard_daily #thegymnasticscourse #crossfit #fitness #whiteboard #training #education #handstands #inversion

Group management. Teaching. Points of performance. Fault correction. Controlling the environment. Music selection. Warm-ups. Cool-downs. - This is what we do 60 minutes at a time during class. The goal is to provide a safe space - a sacred space -where people of all stripes can better themselves one rep at a time. • Accountability. Counseling. Conversations. Sharing. Life advice. Vulnerability. Checking in. Texts, phone calls, emails, coffees, dinners. A shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen. - This is what we do outside those 60 minutes of class time. This is where the good stuff is: this is what REALLY MATTERS to us at the end of the day. • Both are important. Both matter. We value our time inside the gym with our people just as much as our time spent outside the gym with our people. If you are a coach or gym owner: you should too. • We pride ourselves on developing great movers and athletes, but we find our meaning and purpose in developing great humans. We are your coaches. • 🐻 • #karhu #strength #thekarhustrengthco
